1. What is a parent participation co-op?
A parent participation co-op is a school that is primarily managed by the parents of the school's students. Parent participation involves parents or designated adults working in the classroom under the guidance of a professional teacher. Depending on the class level and size, parents will be in attendance on both or one class day a week. Being a non-profit co-op means the school is maintained and managed by the families. Duties include administrative, financial, and physical maintenance of the school.
2. What are the benefits of a co-op preschool?
Being a part of a parent participation co-op preschool means being directly involved in the early education of your child. By participating in the classroom, you can observe firsthand the education your child is receiving and connect with them further by sharing their learning experience. You'll gain insight into your child's development and have the knowledge to reinforce the school lessons at home. Additionally, you'll be interacting with other parents and children which provides you a look at other parent-child relationships and how they may differ or be similar to your own. Being part of a co-op means being part of a community of like-minded families that are similarly invested in their child's education and well-being. It's not only a educational and social experience for the child, but for the parents as well.
3. Is CPPP right for us?
Your choice to enroll in a preschool should be based on what needs you hope to fulfill for your child. The best way to get a feel for our school is to take a tour with your child. During the tour, both you and your child will be able participate in the entire class day. You will have the opportunity to not only observe your child at school, but also witness the daily activities, talk to the parents and teachers and experience what CPPP is about. We believe when you visit CPPP, you will notice the strong sense of community. And hopefully, you'll be able to determine if our community meets your requirements and is the right fit for you and your child.
4. What are the parent participation requirements?
- Work in the Classroom: 2-Day Class parents stay each day. In the 3-Day and Pre-K classes, parents work one assigned work day every week (per child, if necessary).
- Support Position: All families are responsible for one support job position.
- Maintenance: Each family is responsible for working one 4-hour work party or completing one individually assigned project per year.
- Fundraising: All families are required to participate in fundraising as outlined in the CPPP bylaws.
- Parent Education Meetings: At least one parent is required to attend monthly evening meetings.
5. What is a class workday?
Your class workday(s) are the days a parent or designated adult attends school with your child. Your participation in your child's class is a chance for you to observe your child at preschool and to supervise the activities of the children. On your workday you serve as part of the preschool staff, either shadowing your child (in the 2's class) or supervising an area of the school and assisting with the scheduled activities for that day. Under the supervision of the class teacher, you will monitor and guide the children in their play and learning activities.
6. What are the Fundraising requirements?
- Work a total of 4 hours at one or more fundraising events
- Purchase/sell $20 in carnival tickets
- Collect at least $50 in catalog sales
- Donate something cool to the Silent Auction. You can also solicit a donation from a business. It should be worth at least $100 (or donate $50 cash in lieu)
- Also buy a ticket to the Silent Auction. This will be a catered event just for the adults.

7. What are Maintenance hours and work parties?
Each family is required to complete four maintenance hours each school year. Non-working parents are eligible to complete family maintenance hours.
There are two ways to complete your hours. You may sign up for a work party to complete large projects around the school or you may sign up for an individual project, worth 4 hours, to be completed at your own time.
Work parties are scheduled throughout the school year on a Saturday for 4 hours (usually 8am - 12 noon). One parent can come in and work all 4 hours or each parent can come in for 2 hours. We also have a list of projects that can be done on your own time but you cannot bring children with you to complete them.
8. Do I have to attend the parent education meetings?
Attendance at the monthly parent education meetings are mandatory. You are allowed to miss one meeting, but will incur a financial penalty for any meetings missed thereafter. Parent education meetings are an important part of your family's experience at CPPP. You will have the opportunity to learn more about the school and your child's development as well as explore new ideas and concepts on raising your child. It is also a chance to interact with the other parents and enrich your relationship in the school community.
9. What are the age requirements and class times?
Must be 2 years old by September 1st
Tue/Thu 9:00—11:15 am
Must be 3 years old by September 1st
Mon/Wed/Fri 9:00—11:30 am
Must be 4 years old by September 1st
Mon-Thu 12:30—3:30 pm
10. Does my child have to be immunized?
Effective July 1, 2016, all children attending public or private preschool are required by law to be fully vaccinated by the guidelines of the state of California. Families are no longer able to claim religious and personal belief exemptions unless they filed an exemption letter before January 1, 2016.
11. Does my child have to be potty trained?
Potty training is not required for any of our classes. We feel, as with all learning, each child proceeds at their own pace. With working parents in class, children will be provided any assistance needed with going to potty without interrupting the teacher or the general class.
12. Can I register my child in a class for which he/she just misses the required age?
Eligible age for enrollment is based on the September 1st deadline (e.g., for the 2's class: must be two years old by September 1st), but we do consider enrollment on an individual basis.
13. How do I enroll?
Before applying, we require that you take a guided tour of our school. Please visit us during our Open House sessions at the beginning of the year or fill out our Tour/Inquiry form to contact us about scheduling a tour. To begin the enrollment process and apply to our program, please complete an Application form and return to CPPP along with a $65 non-refundable enrollment fee.
14. What is the tuition?
For the 2017-2018 school year, tuition is as follows:
2's class: $180 per month
3's class: $245 per month
Pre-K class: $300 per month
15. What are the costs other than tuition?
In addition to tuition, there is a materials fee paid once per year. This fee is applied towards the cost of art and educational materials used throughout the school year. For the 2017-2018 school year, the materials fee is as follows:
$40 - 2's class
$60 - 3's class
$80 - Pre-K class
16. Are TB tests required?
All parents working with children at a co-op preschool are considered volunteer facility personnel, and are required by the State of California to have a health evaluation and TB test done. The State of California is requiring that the TB tests be done NO MORE THAN 60 DAYS before starting to volunteer in the classroom. Once done, the TB test is good for up to 4 years at our facility.
17. How is discipline handled at CPPP?
At CPPP our goal is to provide an environment where the children feel safe and respected. We guide children in helping them to learn how to solve problems and work out their difficulties when possible. We attempt to teach acceptable behavior and to promote positive self-image by:
- Preventing problems before they start
- Redirecting children to a different behavior or activity
- Offering positive suggestions to differences
- Discussing the situation and why the rule is needed
- Setting up a program that is suitable for the needs of the program
- Offering choices and interesting activities
When a child is not listening to an adult we follow these steps:
- Acknowledge the child’s emotion "You must feel very angry"
- Limit behavior "But you may not hit Henry"
- Suggest a substitute activity "Why not try building blocks instead"
18. Can a non-parent fulfill the workday requirement?
Yes, a non-parent is allowed to volunteer in the classroom, however any adult that will be working in the class has to submit the following, as required by the State of California:
- Proof of immunizations for influenza, pertussis and measles
- Health Screening Report
- Negative TB results (TB tests should be done NO MORE THAN 60 DAYS before starting to volunteer in the classroom)
19. Can I bring my baby to school with me on my workday?
Your workday requires you to supervise not just your child, but all the children at school with the assistance of the teacher and other parents that are working that day. For the safety and concern of the students, it is not reasonable to bring your baby to class on your workday.
20. When do you have open houses or tours?
We hold open houses near the beginning of each calendar year. We have yet to set the date for our 2017-18 school year open house. For reference, our 2016 open house events were held at the end of January/beginning of February. We will update our website once the dates have been determined.
If you are unable to attend or missed our open house events, scheduled tours are offered during the remainder of the school year. You may register for a tour by completing our Tour/Inquiry form. Please refer to the Tour Schedule to determine which tour date to register for when completing the form.
